AI × Humanities × Business: Reimagining University Education

In an era where artificial intelligence and global transformation are deeply intertwined, the traditional model of knowledge transmission in higher education faces significant challenges. In particular, since AI can instantly access and process vast amounts of information, merely teaching students to master specialised knowledge is no longer the core mission of universities.

In light of this challenge, the Bachelor of Global Leadership, Innovation and Society (BGLIS) is introduced as the new flagship programme at HKU Business School, designed to unlock boundless possibilities for personalised growth for the world's most promising young talents.

What are humanity's unique values in the AI era? Our answer is: critical thinking, transdisciplinary judgement, creativity, and humanistic empathy. Built on three pillars—AI technology, humanities, and business—this programme blends academic rigor with social responsibility, aiming to redefine the boundaries of university education.

Breaking Boundaries: A Global Journey of Growth

BGLIS overturns traditional learning models and creates a new framework that integrates transdisciplinary content, global immersion, and personalised development.

  • Year 1: Build the foundation of critical thinking through courses in mathematical logic, economic principles, and philosophical inquiry.
  • Year 2: Immerse yourself in diverse cultures and academic environments by studying at multiple top universities across Chinese Mainland, the U.S., and Europe, honing future-ready business leadership through overseas courses and joint projects.
  • Year 3: Engage in transdisciplinary courses co-designed by leading professors across faculties, tackling core themes like AI, business innovation, and the societal impacts of technology, blending technical expertise with ethical and strategic considerations.
  • Year 4: Step into real-world transformation through a capstone project, applying knowledge in tech companies, nonprofits, or startups to turn ideas into impact.

Each year, master-level mentors from academia or industry will serve as Faculty-in-Residence, working closely with you through workshops, seminars, and one-on-one guidance. They provide not only professional expertise but also cutting-edge thinking and practical experience, helping you discover your research interests and career path.

You may also choose a five-year combined bachelor's-master's track that leads directly to HKU Business School's master's programmes, enabling you to gain advanced professional training in the shortest time.

Next-Generation Global Leaders: Technology as the Tool, Humanity as the Soul

At BGLIS, through diligent study and collaborative growth, you will gradually acquire the qualities and strength needed to lead in the AI era. You will harness advanced technologies while understanding complex societies; possess a global perspective while embracing humanistic care; and not only lead technological transformation and innovation, but also propose solutions to major social issues.

BGLIS does more than cultivate professional skills—it aspires for students to become agents of change in an era where technology and humanity coexist. Whether you choose to start your own venture or join a leading global enterprise, BGLIS graduates, with outstanding transdisciplinary abilities and a global vision, will be pioneers in redefining the value of human knowledge.

Programme Highlights

Transdisciplinary Curriculum
Transdisciplinary Curriculum

BGLIS features a four-year curriculum integrating Artificial Intelligence, Humanities, Business, and Leadership. Students develop core skills in data science, economics, and technology, and examine the social, ethical, and policy dimensions of innovation. This structure merges elements typically requiring a double major into a single programme but goes beyond combining disciplines: Students learn how AI, humanities, and business intersect to drive real-world solutions, preparing them to navigate emerging, uncharted fields.

Global Immersion Experiences
Global Immersion Experiences

International study opportunities are embedded into the curriculum. Students participate in structured global immersion modules at multiple leading institutions across Chinese Mainland, the U.S., and Europe. These are not standalone exchanges but integrated academic components designed to cultivate cross-cultural understanding and global perspectives.

Experiential Learning & Innovation Labs
Experiential Learning & Innovation Labs

Practical application is central to the program. Students engage in internships, real-world projects, and a final-year capstone project, collaborating with companies or organisations to address societal challenges. Activities include developing AI prototypes, consulting for NGOs, or working in entrepreneurship incubators, all guided by faculty and industry mentors.

Small Cohort & Personalised Learning
Small Cohort & Personalised Mentorship

Cohorts are kept small (around 30–40 students) to enable personalised attention and close collaboration. Students receive regular one-on-one coaching, leadership development seminars, and academic advising from faculty and professional mentors, including Faculty-in-Residence. To develop individual leadership paths, students may select one of three specialisation tracks: Technology & Development, Business & Development, or Society & Development.

Leadership & Professional Development
Leadership & Professional Development

The programme includes training in design thinking, negotiation, and public speaking, alongside team-based assignments and discussion forums. The “Leadership in Society” course sequence examines the responsibilities of leaders and the relationship between technology, business, ethics, and social impact.

Networks & Career Pathways
Networks & Career Pathways

Students have access to HKU's alumni network, industry partners, and global opportunities. Guest lectures, networking sessions, and career treks connect students with professionals across sectors. These resources support applications to graduate study and entry into international careers.
