Artificial intelligence is transforming how organisations compete, create value, and make decisions. The (Second) Major and Minor in Artificial Intelligence in Business (AIB) at HKU Business School are designed for students who want to stand at this powerful intersection — where business strategy and operations meet cutting‑edge AI technologies.
AIB equips future leaders with the ability to understand AI, apply it responsibly, and drive innovation across industries. Whether taken as a second major or a minor, the programme empowers students to translate AI capabilities into real business impact.
The AIB major/minor offers students a valuable opportunity to complement their primary field of study, enhancing their ability to leverage intelligent technologies in business settings. It also fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration, which is essential for the responsible and effective deployment of AI in society.
The (Second) Major and Minor in AIB aims to equip students with the expertise needed to integrate AI into business strategy and operations. Students learn to design, implement, and manage AI solutions effectively. To ensure students can navigate AI’s transformative potential in business, the AIB major/minor adopts a balanced curriculum that fosters technical proficiency, strategic insight, and ethical responsibility. The curriculum emphasizes three key areas:
● Technical Foundations: Mastering AI tools and analytics to develop data-driven solutions for business challenges.
● Business Applications: Applying AI to enhance decision-making in areas like marketing, finance, and operations.
● Responsible Innovation: Addressing ethical, legal, and societal concerns to ensure AI is deployed responsibly and strategically.
The AIB major requires a total of 78 credits, comprising 24 credits of Faculty Core courses, 30 credits of disciplinary core courses, and 24 credits of disciplinary electives including 18 credits from the Faculty of Business and Economics and 6 credits from other Faculties. The AIB minor is tailored for students who seek foundational AI knowledge to complement their primary field of study. While less intensive than the major, it provides essential AI skills for business applications, comprising 24 credits of disciplinary core courses and 12 credits of disciplinary electives from the Faculty of Business and Economics.
