BUSI1807 Business Consulting Practicum
This is a 6-credit experiential learning course (a free-elective course for students in the HKU Business School).
We aim to offer students the hands-on experience of working with clients in solving “real-life” problems related to their studies. Students who have successfully completed the practicum will gain valuable business consulting experience to complement their academic learning and enhance their employability.
The BCP 2025-26 offers students to undergo a team-based consultancy experience, allowing them to apply their classroom business knowledge to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions that strengthen the financial sustainability of NGOs selected by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS). Ultimately, making a positive social impact in our local communities!
- Before commencing the practicum, students will be offered practical training, including basic consulting skills, financial management skills for NGOs and data analytics skills to cope with the assigned business projects.
- Student consultants will diagnose issues and recommend actionable interventions such as cost-control measures, diversified income strategies, rolling cash-flow forecasts, and donor-segmentation campaigns. Ultimately, this directly assists clients—Hong Kong NGOs—in achieving financial sustainability and contributes to the resilience of community services by helping NGOs optimise resources, diversify funding, and manage financial risk. Students will interact with the executives or owners of these organisations as a team, providing a free business consulting service to them.
- Throughout the project, student consultants will receive evaluations and feedback from the business clients as well as from the Course Coordinator and Professional Mentors for continuous improvement. In particular, every week, students will need to attend meetings with the Course Coordinator to receive comments and advice for continuous improvement.
