LEAD to the Future - Business Case Competition 2022 (1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up and 3rd Runner-up)

Three teams of our students won the 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up and 3rd Runner-up in “LEAD to the Future” Business Case Competition 2022 respectively.

The “LEAD to the Future” Business Case Competition, launched by JCI Island in 2022, aims to assist young talents in developing their future skills, strengthening their business sense, and enriching their understanding of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and its development opportunities. The competition provided a platform for finalists to communicate and interact with business leaders to broaden their business knowledge and connections, thus enhancing their future competitiveness through a series of business skill workshops and case competitions.

The competition consisted of two rounds. Participating teams submitted a written business proposal. Based on the submitted proposal, ten groups out of sixty proceeded to the next round where participants were required to present their business case to the judges, with guidance and support from their assigned mentors.

Student's Sharing:

“We are delighted to announce that our team was awarded as the first runner-up of the LEAD to the Future case competition organized by JCI Island.

During the competition, we had the privilege to attend various workshops. This allowed us to learn more about being a better businessperson, such as problem-solving, team building and data analytics. Also, we were required to propose a business expansion plan for a local company within a week and pitch our innovative ideas to experts from different fields, which enhanced our working ability to complete tasks under a tight schedule.

Apart from the professional skills acquired, working as a team, we constantly challenged each other in order to achieve a better proposal. Despite a fierce discussion process, we not only learned from each other, but also built a stronger bonding after the competition. We were pleased that we got the experience together.”

“We are now living in a rapidly changing business environment where success depends on the right timing, favourable environment as well as support from different parties. The competition equipped us with an international innovative perspective and problem-solving skills to seize the business opportunities in the Greater Bay Area and the rest of the world in the future.

Through rounds of idea brainstorming, proposal drafting, mentoring and presentations, we had a sip of how the business world is described “as fierce as war fields”(商場如戰場). As Sun Tzu said at the start of The Art of War, a commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage, and strictness, which are indeed what we, aspired to be business leaders and strive to have as well. To meet with renowned industrial practitioners and the strongest school undergraduates from Hong Kong is an occasion to be cherished. We are thankful to explore the above doctrines with the judges, guest speakers, organizing committee, competitors as well as our fellow teammates.

Last but not least, it is our greatest honour to be awarded the second runner-up in the competition. We are even more honoured to win it on behalf of the University of Hong Kong, where we met Chung Sze Ki and Lau Tsz Yee, our group leader who brought the team together at the start and through hard times. Only through my alma mater do I understand the essence of excellence – starting from goodwill, being sincere and embracing everything – that’s our initiative to join this competition. In the future, apart from our own professional aspirations, we are also committed to  “manifesting the virtue”(明德)  and contributing to Hong Kong as business elites.”

"We are honoured to have been awarded 3rd Runner-up in the LEAD to the Future Business Case Competition 2022, and we are grateful for the many opportunities to gain more insights into the business world. Prior to the official competition, we had the opportunity to participate in workshops. Among the workshops we attended were ones related to team building, networking, and technology. These were eye-openers as well as a headstart to our business plans. When our project finally kicked-off, we were assigned a case with the Chinese medical company, Chinese Essence Medical Group (CEMG). We found it particularly challenging to research data about the market especially for specific data in Hong Kong and GBA. Despite the obstacle, we were still able to qualify for the final round.

After the competition, we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to connect with the CEO of CEMG. By participating in the resourceful networking session, we were able to obtain constructive feedback from reputable C-level industry professionals, which has helped us visualise our financial impact and provided us with possible improvements in strategy feasibility. Additionally, it was incredibly humbling to see the Champion Team's presentation during the prize presentation ceremony, as their presentation was concise while at the same time covering all key aspects of their business idea.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our mentor, Mr. Kelvin Wong, an experienced business leader in Hong Kong, for guiding us step by step to formulate a commercially feasible strategy and a profitable business model, as well as providing constructive feedback on our final round presentation. Taking part in this case competition was a fruitful and enlightening experience, and we would all say that it was truly the highlight of our summer.”
