Netis Tse (Class of 2022)
During Netis’ years of studies, he was introduced to essential finance courses that lay the groundwork for their understanding of the field. At senior years, more specialized courses are provided, such as lending, wealth management, green finance, and trending market topics that are not commonly found in other programs. These courses equipped him with practical knowledge relevant to his career and provided him with a competitive advantage.
Netis greatly appreciates the opportunity for coffee chats and Connectivity in Finance initiated by Prof. Wong, the program director, which have enabled him to forge connections with industry professionals, including private bankers and fund managers, enriching his financial sense through offering him a glimpse into real banking operations, supplementing his book knowledge with practical insights. Additionally, alumni gatherings provide a platform for asset management and private banking professionals to network across different cohorts. This strong bonding has been beneficial, providing both academic support and advice on internships and career progression. The AMPB society also contributed in fostering a collaborative environment where students can share resources and interview tips, crucial for securing internships in their third year.
Furthermore, Netis specifically recalled the support given by Prof. Wong, who offered guidance that has broadened his perspective on industry operations. Her advice on networking and handling internship challenges has been invaluable. She also facilitated virtual networking opportunities despite COVID-19 limitations, encouraging her students to mentor juniors, perpetuating the educational cycle and deepening his understanding of the industry.
Currently rotating at Citibank, Netis has experiences in the product team as fixed income specialist, risk and control team, and lending team, etc. He highlighted the three most applicable gains from the program have been networking, insight into the private banking sector, and knowledge. He believes interpersonal skills are crucial, along with proactiveness in seeking opportunities and building networks, even as a university junior. His recommendation to proceed to the industry is to be proficient with tools like Bloomberg and to collaborate with a small group of peers for regular market analyses. This practice not only fosters inspiration but also helps establish a routine of staying market-savvy and refining related skills.
