Matthew Mak

Matthew Mak (Class of 2022)

Matthew ventured into the AMPB programme with a sense of curiosity and a dash of intrigue. Although initially uncertain about the specifics of the programme, he was drawn to it by its unique reputation, having heard that it was not only fascinating but also a standout choice among a sea of finance-related offerings.

Throughout his university experience, Matthew found profound value in the coffee chats provided by Prof. Wong. These sessions, which brought him face-to-face with alumni and seasoned professionals from the finance industry, significantly expanded his worldview and professional network. They were not just about sharing industry knowledge and insights but also about honing vital soft and technical skills. His conversations addressed the nuances of effective communication, the importance of proactive engagement, and strategies for posing impactful questions. One conversation that particularly resonated with him was with a senior from a renowned private bank, who imparted wisdom on the attributes necessary for success in the field, the art of relationship management, and the emerging opportunities in China over the next decade. This interaction reaffirmed his commitment to a career in finance.

Academically, Matthew found the program's tailored courses integral to his understanding of the private banking sector, with their relevance extending into his current role as a private banker. Courses in micro and macroeconomics, statistics, and finance laid a foundational knowledge base, while specialised classes in alternative investments and green finance were particularly transformative. The former offered insights into asset classes beyond traditional stocks and bonds, such as real estate, private equity, and hedge funds—crucial for any private banker. The latter provided a thorough grounding in ESG principles, current regulations, and the ongoing evolution of systems and policies. Additionally, his final thesis project, which involved crafting an investment proposal for a hypothetical client, was instrumental in developing his problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and leadership abilities.

Matthew's parting advice to fellow students is to seize every opportunity to network and never hesitate to ask questions. The business world brims with encounters and prospects, and mastering the art of inquiry can lead to a deeper understanding, setting one on the path to making informed choices for a successful career.
